spun glass theatre code of conduct
All employees, Trustees, volunteers, associates and audiences should be treated with dignity and respect and have the right to work in an environment which is free from harassment, intimidation or other forms of bullying.
- Act legally and properly – by acting with integrity, honesty, within the law and our governing document, and in the charity’s best interests at all times.
- Create a safe space– in which everyone is encouraged and feels able to speak. Do not assume that others have the same physical and emotional boundaries as you. Promote relationships that are based on openness, honesty, trust, respect and compassion.Ensure that everyone is treated fairly, with respect and kept safe from harm. Report any allegations/suspicions of abuse or fraud.
- Keep small children in mind – Appreciate that as a family theatre company we have a greater responsibility to conduct ourselves in a manner which helps caregivers feel safe and supported to bring small children to experience arts and culture with us. This means ensuring your manner is appropriate for being amongst small children at all times, even if the event is not a family event. Do not allow a child to be left in your care if the event is a child + caregiver event. Act in accordance with our safeguarding policy.
- Ensure language is appropriate – not offensive or discriminatory. Do not make sarcastic, insensitive, derogatory or sexually suggestive comments or gestures to or in front of anyone.
- Be warm, open, reliable and welcoming – our work depends on cultivating a loyal audience so we must promote qualities that build trust and respect.
- We respect parenting differences and treat each parent as an expert on their child.
- Positively challenge– each other, but avoid being confrontational – saying ‘no’, ‘that won’t work’. Instead, we ask open questions that will help us work together to explore/test an idea, or suggestion – who, what, when and how, but not why, which can come across as accusatory).
- Focus on solutions – by talking about the past, only to learn from it, avoid talking about what we can’t do and, instead, focus on what we could do. Do not seek to blame or diminish other staff members, especially to participants or external partners.
- Welcome differing viewpoints – respect each other’s right to hold a different opinion and recognise our own right to do so too. Appreciate the specific opinions, stereotypes and lived experiences of those living in Hastings, and be careful not to act with bias towards these ideas or use the terms flippantly.
Challenge any unacceptable behaviour and report any breaches of this Code of Conduct or any concerns without delay to a trustee. Any current Trustee of Spun Glass Theatre will open and willing to speak about breaches of this Code of Conduct.
This charity code of conduct applies to all trustees, other volunteers, employees, contractors, and third-party representatives of Spun Glass Theatre. Its requirements should be reflected in other policies and procedures, agreements and contracts, as necessary.
